What is the importance of having my MOT done every year?

As a car driver, I know that I have to have an MOT done to allow me to drive it every year. I know that I have to do this but why is this the case?

When you have a car over a certain age it is very important, indeed a legal obligation, to have it checked to make sure it is safe and roadworthy.  This is called an MOT and is done once a year. If you don’t have a valid and current MOT certificate, you are breaking the law.

The test, also known as the Ministry of Transportation test is a through examination of any vehicle over three years so that the safety of your vehicle is ensured as well as the levels of exhaust emissions.  It is your responsibility to get your MOT done and if you don’t you won’t be able to renew your road tax and it could invalidate you insurance.  You could also face a fine of up to £1000 if you don’t have an MOT certificate.

Only selected operators can test your vehicle. These are specially trained testers and VOSA.  This is the vehicle and operator services agency - the body that is responsible for giving a licence to the nominated tester and to the MOT testing station.

So what kind of things are tested during an MOT?

Brakes are tested as these are one of the most important aspects of car safety.  Should the brake pads be too worn or another part of the breaking system found to be unsafe you will have to get them mended in order for your car to pass its test. The same applies to any individual part of the car such as the windscreen wipers, exhaust or hand brake.

The test will also check you have enough windscreen fluid, oil and the tyres are in good condition and correctly aligned.

There is a cost to having your MOT done.  Where I have my MOT in Sheffield done, it is £45.00 but it varies from one test centre to another. Some garages offer you discounts if you also have your vehicle serviced at the same time.

When a car passes its MOT then it is registered on a computer data base.  This means that if you are thinking of buying a car second hand, you can check whether the car has an MOT certificate, giving you some reassurance that the car is safe to drive.

You don’t have to wait for the date of the MOT renewal to get you test done though, you can have it done 28 days before the expiry date, giving you time to get any work done on your car should it fail.

So as you can see it is important to get your MOT done on time. Not only will you have the reassurance that your car is in roadworthy condition, you will avoid a nasty fine if you don’t get it done!
